Lincoln Pilgrimage 2015

Posted by Jason Bisel on April 27, 2015 at 4:00 PM

We had a great weekend with 8 scouts and 4 leaders in attendance as we set out for the Lincoln Pilgrimage. We arrived late in the evening and got the essentials of camp set up Friday night at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Saturday morning we had some pretty good rains, but fortunately we went to the Lincoln museum and library during the worst of the rain. While at the museum some of the scouts participated in the Museum Quest. Afterwards, we visited the old Union Station where some of the sets and props from the movie Lincoln were being displayed. Upon returning to the fairgrounds, we ate lunch and then visited the pioneer challenge where various activities were available. The scouts threw tomahawks, shot BB guns and sling shots, did some fishing and tug of war. With the late night before, a strong wind all day, the rain and activities, the scouts (and leaders) were worn out and after dinner everyone hit the sack pretty early.

Sunday was a stark contrast to Saturday; it was comfortably warm and sunny. We packed up camp and made our way to Oak Ridge Cemetery. While there we visited the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam War memorials. Toured the Lincoln Memorial and tomb and then participated in the walk from the cemetery to the old Illinois State Capital Building. We were part of approximately 3000 scouts that took part in the ceremonies from 10 states
